A chemist and a solicitor, an unusual pair to start a successful family business, a Letting and estate Agency in the Jewellery Quarter (JQ), Birmingham.
When my daughters were born, and moving from Scotland to the Midlands. I went back to work part time, firstly in the NHS in a scientific capacity, then as a counsellor in local charities.
Having had some “gaps” in pension payments, I decided to invest in property. I met Andrew Kay, then a practicing solicitor who did my conveyancing.
Around year 2000, Andrew and I decided to invest in properties and settled for the Jewellery Quarter. Whilst furnishing properties, I fell in love with Birmingham, the JQ with its old buildings, village feeling and the people we started to meet. Some asked if we will let their properties, so Arkade Property was born.
It was hard work and at that time everyone wanted to rent or buy in the city centre or Broad St. It was not easy to convince them that the JQ had lots to offer, lovely place to live, affordability. Soon however it changed from “do you have anything in the city centre” to “do you have anything in JQ?
We grew slowly, as a family business, more importantly with high ethical standards.
In 2010 I decided to retire, my daughters had been working at Arkade Property and Sybilla took the option to became a director, whilst my daughter Eilidh went into pastures new as a solicitor.
Andrew, my initial business partner, Sybilla and James who also had been working for Arkade and took the opportunity to become a director, are a formidable Team offering a caring, friendly and highly skilled Agency now located opposite the lovely Golden Square in JQ with the business covering most areas in the West Midlands.
I was privileged to be part of Arkade and in some ways I still am as a founder member of a great local business.
